All Ask Computer and Internet Glossary
An Attachment is a file, for instance a spreadsheet or digital image, that is sent along with an email and therefore is described as "attached" to an email message. You can send an attachment with an email or receive an Attachment with an email.
Attachments are sometimes the route by which a computer system becomes infected with a virus and thus should be handled with caution. Good advice is to never "click-on" or open an attachment to an email message unless you are absolutely sure of its content or trust its source. A good Anti-Virus program will check incoming email and attachments and isolate or delete infected attachments.
