All Ask Computer and Internet Glossary
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity and applies to the technology used to connect local area networks wirelessly. WiFi wireless standards include 802.11b or 802.11g. Wi-Fi enabled devices such as computers, mobile phones and PDAs are able to connect to the Internet when near a Wi-Fi access point. The region covered by one or several WiFi access points is called a hotspot. Hotspots can range from a single room to huge areas of overlapping hotspots covering many square miles.
